Its official name is “to Gytheion”. The seat of the municipality is Gytheio and belongs to the geographical region of Peloponnesus.

During the former administrative division of Greece (“Kapodistrias” project) and until 2010, Gytheio belonged to Gytheiou Local District, the former municipality of GYTHEIOU the prefecture of LAKONIAS.
